Friday marks 41 years since Coca-Cola resumes selling old formula

ATLANTA (CBS, KYMA) - On July 10, 1985, Coca-Cola announced it would bring back the old Coke formula and call Coke Classic.

The company originally announced the new formula for Coke in April 1985 when CEO Roberto Goizueta declared it be "smoother, rounder, yet bolder-a more harmonious flavor."

Public reaction deemed the taste "too sweet" with many comparing it to Pepsi.

Following the July 10th announcement, Coca-Cola Classic quickly outsold New Coke and within a few months had returned to its position as the top-selling sugar cola, ahead of Pepsi.

The company rebranded the new formula "Coke II" in 1990 before it was eventually abandoned in 2002.

Briefly in 2019, Coca-Cola re-released a very limited run of New Coke.
