FIRST ALERT ACTION DAY: Tracking extreme heat sticking around; slight cooldown this weekend

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - A Weather Authority First Alert Action Day remains in effect Thursday as dangerous heat continues across the Desert Southwest, increasing winds are also expected to create elevated fire weather concerns heading into the weekend.

Extreme Heat Warnings remains in effect for both Yuma County and Imperial County until 8 p.m. Thursday, with afternoon temperatures expected to reach between 107 and 112 degrees in both counties.

These temperatures can quickly lead to heat-related illnesses for anyone spending extended time outdoors.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities between 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and wear lightweight clothing.

While the heat remains the primary concern Thursday afternoon, attention is also turning to a developing period of critical fire weather conditions.

A Red Flag Warning is scheduled to take effect across portions of Yuma County beginning Friday morning and continuing through Saturday evening. We're tracking strengthening wind gusts combined with very dry air to create favorable conditions for rapid fire growth.

Winds are tracking to increase Friday afternoon and Saturday, with speeds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts potentially exceeding 40 mph. Relative humidity values are expected to remain low in the 5-20 degree dew point range, creating an environment where any fire that develops could spread quickly.

There has also been a wind advisory issued for Imperial County beginning Saturday at 11 a.m. and ending Saturday evening at 11 p.m.

Fire officials encourage residents to avoid activities that could spark a fire, including dragging trailer chains, parking vehicles on dry grass, or using equipment that generates sparks during the warning period.

Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to drop a couple degrees into the weekend. By Sunday, we are tracking highs of 97°F in the Imperial Valley while Yuma's highs are tracking down to 99°F.
