SCOTUS sides with President Trump on two immigration issues

WASHINGTON (CNN, KYMA) - The U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) handed President Donald Trump a pair of wins in two major immigration cases Thursday.

One of them clears the way for the White House to restart its controversial asylum policy. It aims to curb the number of migrants processed at the southern border who claim to be fleeing political, racial or religious persecution in their home country.

The policy would turn them back before they ever step foot on U.S. soil. The ruling came in a 6-3 decision.

Also Thursday, SCOTUS ruled in a case dealing with temporary protection status.

It allows migrants from certain countries facing strife to legally remain and work in the United States under the active designation.

The court said the Trump Administration could end those protections, potentially impacting millions of foreign nationals.

Conservative Justice Samuel Alito essentially said the court couldn't review whether the Trump Administration had appropriately reviewed the status for Haitians and Syrians.

That's because the law bars courts from doing so.
