Preliminary hearing set for California mother accused of killing her daughter

SANTA MARIA, Calif. (CBS, KYMA) - A preliminary hearing has been set for a mother accused of killing her nine-year-old daughter.

Ashlee Buzzard, who has pleaded not guilty, was inside a Santa Maria courtroom Monday morning.

September 16 was chosen as the date for her preliminary hearing on first-degree murder charges. That's when the prosecution will try and convince Judge Stephen Dunkle if there's enough evidence for the case to proceed to a trial.

Buzzard's defense attorney also announced Monday she will soon file a request for an accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for Buzzard.

The judge is expected to consider that motion during the next scheduled court date in the case on July 7.

Buzzard is accused of shooting her daughter Melodee last year and leaving her body in rural Utah.
