Greenpeace and Jane Fonda premiere new documentary Gaslit

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (KYMA) - Hollywood legend and climate activist Jane Fonda hit the red carpet for the Santa Monica premiere of Gaslit, a new documentary taking a closer look at the human cost of America's oil and gas boom.

KYMA was on the red carpet to speak with the filmmakers about the stories behind the headlines.

The Greenpeace-backed film follows Fonda as she travels through Gulf State communities, meeting families and activists who say their lives have been negatively impacted by the expanding fossil fuel industry.

"We have to expose it and what it means and what it looks like on the ground. And we decided that the best thing we could do is to talk to the people that are on the ground that are fighting it," Fonda told KYMA.

At the premiere, Fonda was joined by director Katie Camosy, Manning Rollerson III, Leah Thomas, and several community leaders featured in the film.

Camosy spoke with KYMA about how everyday Americans can take action in their own neighborhoods.

"There are a number of things we can do, and if you go to the website, Gaslitdoc.com, you're gonna see them. If you watch the film, you can help the people in it, but also look in your community about which groups are working on these issues, and I guarantee you there's folks organizing to stop that data center," Camosy said.

This is Camosey's directorial film debut.

"To watch your family die one by one, and watch your local government allow your homes to be taken, just to expand industry, it just seems like as an Army Veteran, there's no American Dream," Rollerson reflected.

Greenpeace hopes the documentary will spark conversations and action about environmental justice.

Fonda said she hopes to screen the film in schools saying, "We're going to carry out an impact campaign."
