Strong storms causes issues in Tucson area

TUCSON, Ariz. (NBC, KYMA) - Strong storms caused serious issues in the Tucson, Arizona area Wednesday.

The high winds and heavy rain knocked down power lines in the area. Crews were dispatched to repair those lines and restore power to residents.

Meanwhile, the heavy rains caused some flooding, leading to several swift water rescues by the Tucson Fire Department (TFD).

Several people were swept away in flash flooding, ending up in the fast moving Santa Cruz River Wednesday.

Eight people were pulled from the river by rescue personnel. Unfortunately, one person who was caught in the flooding is still missing.

Deputy Chief Eric Jakoby with TFD says he have never seen that many people needing to be rescued from the river in one day.

"Normally, it's one or two. Vocationally we have multiple cars that drive through flooded washes, but as far as people in the water...this is probably the most I've ever seen at once," Deputy Chief Jakoby shared.
