Yuma fans rally behind Mexico as 2026 FIFA World Cup begins

Mexico defeats South Africa 2-0 to open up the 2026 FIFA World Cup

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - The wait for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is over, and soccer fans across Yuma gathered to celebrate the tournament's opening day as Mexico began its World Cup campaign.

Fans packed Mariscos El Navegante to watch El Tri's opening match, creating an atmosphere that brought together families, friends and soccer supporters from across the community.

For many, the event was about more than just the game. It was an opportunity to celebrate their culture and connect with fellow fans.

"It feels really cool that people here don't know each other but still share tables and get the opportunity to meet one another," says El Navegante part-owner Dayanara Ortiz. "Families are here together to spend a good time and enjoy the games."

Mexico opened the tournament with a 2-0 victory and will look to build on that performance throughout group play. Supporters are hopeful this year's squad can surpass the nation's previous World Cup best, a quarterfinal appearance achieved in 1970 and again when Mexico hosted the tournament in 1986.

"They have new players," Carlos Uriarte said. "I don't know...new players, new hope."

Others believe Mexico's younger roster could help the team make a deeper run than in previous tournaments.

"We have a younger team," Jesus Medina said. "Usually, we don't get this kind of players, so I guess we're getting further than the quarterfinals."

While expectations vary, fans agreed their support will remain unwavering regardless of the results.

"I'm not sure if we have really good players like other years," Christian Ortiz said. "But we're going to keep supporting our team because we're Mexicans, and that's what we do."

The celebration also welcomed fans cheering for other nations.

"I'm going for Portugal, so I hope they win," Angel Hernandez said. "But respect to the other countries. I've been waiting for a long time, honestly, so I'm excited to be here and excited to watch it."

Mexico will return to the pitch next Thursday to face South Korea, which opened the tournament with a 2-1 comeback victory over Czechia.
