Hurricanes capture second Stanley Cup in franchise history

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (KYMA) - The Carolina Hurricanes are Stanley Cup champions once again.

Carolina secured its second Stanley Cup title in franchise history on Sunday night, defeating the Vegas Golden Knights in six games to bring hockey’s most coveted trophy back to Raleigh for the first time since 2006.

The championship victory also marked a historic achievement for head coach Rod Brind’Amour. Brind’Amour, who captained the Hurricanes during their first Stanley Cup-winning season in 2006, became just the fourth person in NHL history to win a Stanley Cup as both a captain and head coach of the same franchise.

Veteran captain Jordan Staal added another chapter to his impressive career with the championship run. The 37-year-old earned his second Stanley Cup title, ending a 17-year gap between championships. The longest span between Stanley Cup victories by a player in NHL history.

Staal’s impact throughout the postseason was recognized with the Conn Smythe Trophy, awarded annually to the most valuable player of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. With the honor, he became the oldest player in NHL history to receive the award.

The Hurricanes championship concludes a memorable NHL season and gives Carolina fans another historic moment to celebrate. As the team prepares for its Stanley Cup parade and festivities, the franchise can now proudly claim two championships and a place among the league’s elite once again.
