‘Backrooms’ dominates weekend box office

(CNN, KYMA) - An internet-inspired horror film scared off all competitors at the weekend box office.

Sony's "The Breadwinner," a family comedy starring Nate Bargatze and Mandy Moore, debuted in fifth place with $7.5 million.

Lionsgate's "Michael," a biopic on Michael Jackson, slipped from third to fourth place, earning $11.7 million.

Lucasfilm's "The Mandalorian and Grogu," based off the Disney+ series set in the "Star Wars" universe, dropped out of hyperspace and fell from first place to third, earning $25 million.

Focus Features' "Obsession," a psychological horror film directed by Curry Barker, remained in second place, adding $26.4 million to its North American box office total, and pushing it past the $100 million mark.

A24's "Backrooms," a science fiction psychological horror film directed by Kane Parsons, starring Academy Award nominees Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, and based on an internet-published horror story, scared up $81.5 million and a number one debut in its opening weekend.
