‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ earns over $100 million at weekend box office

(CNN, KYMA) - The official start of the summer movie season brought people out to theaters, and one film in the longest-running franchise earned the top spot at the box office.

Amazon MGM Studios' "The Sheep Detectives," starring Hugh Jackman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, stayed in fifth place, earning $12.5 million over the four-day holiday weekend.

20th Century Studios' "The Devil Wears Prada 2," which features Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci reprising their roles respectively, added $16.5 million, falling to fourth place.

Lionsgate's "Michael," a biopic on Michael Jackson, went from first place to third place, but made another $25.7 million, pushing its domestic total to nearly $320 million.

Focus Features' "Obsession," a psychological horror film directed by Curry Barker, rose to second place in its sophomore weekend, earning $28.5 million.

Disney's "The Mandalorian and Grogu," based off the Disney+ series set in the "Star Wars" universe, soared to the top spot, opening with an estimated $102 million.
