Toshifumi Suzuki, 7-Eleven founder, dies at 93

(CNN, KYMA) - Toshifumi Suzuki, the retail pioneer who transformed Japan's convenience store industry, has died.

Parent company Seven and i Holdings released a statement Monday, saying Suzuki died of heart failure last week.

"We extend our heartfelt gratitude for the support and goodwill he received throughout his life and career," the company said.

In 1973, he defied widespread skepticism to bring the American brand 7-Eleven to Tokyo.

Suzuki revolutionized retail, using data to drive rapid inventory turnover and expand ready-to-eat meals, helping turn convenience stores into a cornerstone of daily life in Japan.

He was 93-years-old.
