Hawaii doctor convicted of attempted manslaughter seeks new trial

(CNN, KYMA) - The Hawaii doctor convicted of attempted manslaughter for an attack on his wife is seeking a new trial, saying jurors didn't understand the law.

Gerhardt Konig had been charged with attempted murder.

Arielle Konig testified her husband hit her in the head with a rock, tried to inject her with a syringe, and tried to throw her over the cliff.

Witnesses saw part of the attack and the doctor's own son testified he confessed to the attack.

Jurors convicted him of the lesser charge of attempted manslaughter based on extreme mental or emotional disturbance. Afterwards, several jurors did interviews saying they didn't believe Konig intended to kill his wife.

In his appeal, Konig says Hawaii law states the jurors must all agree that the intent was death.

Konig currently faces up to 20 years when he's sentenced in August.
