Grand Canyon’s North Rim reopens almost a year after wildfires

GRAND CANYON, Ariz. (CNN, KYMA) - Ten months after two devastating wildfires ripped through the Grand Canyon's North Rim, parks in the area have reopened.

The reopening happened Friday.

The wildfires had burned more than 200,000 acres and destroyed more than 100 buildings, including the Historic North Rim Grand Canyon Lodge.

The National Park Service says repair work is still ongoing, and a pair of tour guides said it will be great to have people returning to the area now that the park has reopened.

"Number one for us would be safety for the people that come and visit. This gives us hope that things will go back to normal," said Russell Jacoby, a guide and hunter.

"We know that they're working hard and have plans to help prevent what happened going forward," said Laura Jacoby, another guide and hunter.
