New study says one-third of Americans are scaling back on summer travel

(NBC, KYMA) - For many Americans, summer travel plans are taking a back seat this year as higher costs continue to strain household budgets.

A new survey from Talker Research finds more than one-third of Americans say they will not travel this summer, the busiest vacation season of the year.

The poll of 5,000 people shows rising costs are the biggest reason, with more than half of respondents citing expensive flights and higher gas prices.

Others say they are focused on saving money or paying down debt instead of taking a vacation.

Rather than planning cross-country getaways or tropical escapes, many Americans say they will opt for "staycations" or quieter, low-cost trips closer to home.
