City of Brawley reacts to experiencing multiple earthquakes

Esther Jobb Ruth

BRAWLEY, Calif. (KYMA) - The City of Brawley experienced a series of earthquakes Saturday evening, lasting into early Sunday morning.

"Everything fell from my shelves, my restroom, the cabinets...We had some broken coffee mugs and glasses and yeah a lot of shaking," said George Prieto, a resident of Brawley.

The earthquakes clocked in at just under 5.0 on the Richter Scale.

According to the United States Geological Survey, aftershocks can occur within several hours, and even up to a day after the main shock.

The City of Brawley activated its Emergency Operations Center to support response efforts.

Prieto said he slept in his truck due to the constant aftershocks.

"I decided to sleep outside because the house was rocking and rolling and. It's just a lot. It's a lot of shaking for our valley," he explained.

The California Governor's Office advises residents to stop, cover and hold on during an earthquake, and to be familiar with exits and evacuation routes.
