Imperial Valley air quality alert in effect despite low winds

KYMA

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Imperial and El Centro are officially in an air quality alert through Sunday at 9 p.m. The rest of the Desert Southwest is not in the same predicament but should still be weary of potential conditions.

To somewhat of a surprise, the air quality threat is not due to extreme wind gusts like we have experienced on-and-off for the past couple of weeks. Gusts will remain relatively calmer, although the Imperial Valley could see them pick up to 15mph throughout the afternoon and into the evening.

Temperatures made their way into the triple-digits on Friday and it looks like they are going to remain above the 100°F threshold at least throughout most of the next week. Highs for today and Sunday are expected to be around 105°F.

The sunshine will be in full effect, so the weekend should be bearable despite what we are anticipating to be poorer air conditions. If you're planning on heading outdoors for Mother's Day, be cautious of this.
