Britney Spears pleads guilty in DUI case

UPDATE (11:43 PM): Britney Spears has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from her arrest last month on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI).

Spears entered the plea via her lawyer Monday.

The pop star pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of reckless driving, and the 44-year-old was not required to appear in court.

Spears admitted to violating California's "Wet Reckless" Law, which provides plea options in some DUI cases and can be offered at the county prosecutor's discretion.

The law applies to defendants without a prior DUI history and a low blood-alcohol level in a case not involving a crash or injuries.

Spear's attorney, Michael Goldstein says she is taking responsibility for her actions.

"I think everybody is pleased with the result. We appreciate the court we appreciate the thoughtful disposition. We appreciate the district attorney recognizing the positive steps that Britney has taken to help herself, and you know, we expect that she'll continue to do so," Goldstein expressed.

She was sentenced to 12 months of probation and one day of jail, credited as time served, as well as a required DUI class and state-mandated fines.

LOS ANGELES (CNN, KYMA/NBC) - Singer Britney Spears is being arraigned on charges of driving under the influence (DUI) Monday.

Spears, 44, was arrested in March of this year and charged with DUI after she was pulled over for speeding and driving erratically on a Southern California highway.

While Spears is not required to be in court since the charge is a misdemeanor, Ventura County prosecutors say she will be given the chance to plead guilty to reckless driving involving alcohol or drugs.

The plea would likely result in probation, state fines and fees, and requiring her to take a DUI class.

Back in April, Spears' representative said she voluntarily checked herself into a treatment facility following the arrest.
