Empire State Building celebrates 95th anniversary with light display

NEW YORK CITY (NBC, KYMA) - The iconic Empire State Building celebrated its 95th birthday with a special light display Friday.

It was a festive multi-color light display befitting of one of the world's most famous buildings. The tower sparked brightly over the Big Apple, and looked more vibrant than ever in the night sky.

Standing proud at more than 1,200 feet, the Empire State Building was completed and opened to the public on May 1, 1931.

On that day, President Herbert Hoover pressed a button in Washington, D.C. to officially open the building and turn on the lights for the very first time, and the rest, as they say, is history.
