Yuma Catholic sweeps Pima 6-0 to advance to Division III tennis Quarterfinals

The Shamrocks remain perfect after winning in the first round of the team playoffs

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Perfection continued for Yuma Catholic, as the Shamrocks' girls tennis team improved to 15-0 with a dominant 6-0 sweep over Pima in the opening round of the Division III state playoffs, dropping just three total games across all matches.

Top-seeded Yuma Catholic controlled the meet from start to finish, advancing to the quarterfinals while reinforcing its status as a title contender.

Freshman standout Sofia Gallegos said the team’s success is the result of consistent effort throughout the season.

"It stems from a lot of practice and a lot of dedication," Gallegos said. "We practice five times a week for almost two hours every day. Our amazing coaches are constantly on us about everything, and we're all just really passionate. None of us are slackers. We all try and all really want to win."

Coach Porfirio Gonzalez has also pushed the team to elevate its level of play by creating more challenging practice environments, including scrimmages against the boys team.

The Shamrocks now turn their attention to both individual and team postseason play. Yuma Catholic will compete in singles and doubles action in Phoenix over the weekend before returning home to host The Gregory School in the quarterfinals on May 5 at 3 p.m.

With an unblemished record and a decisive playoff start, Yuma Catholic continues its pursuit of a state championship.
