53rd Annual Lawnmower Race underway in England

WEST SUSSEX, England (CBS, KYMA) - As the weather gets warmer, it's time to fire up the lawnmower, or in the United Kingdom, race it.

The 53rd season of lawnmower racing is underway in England, with some machines hitting up to 60 miles per hour during the ten-minute matchups.

Blades are removed for safety, so the only drivers are mowing down is the competition.

"This is really cheap, entry level, doesn't cost a lot of money if you don't want it to. And it's brilliant fun," said Lee McGelachie, a first-time lawnmower racer.

Lawnmower racing was dreamed up in a pub back in 1973 by an Irishman who was having a few pints with friends while watching a groundskeeper cut the grass at the local Cricket Grounds.
