Two congressmen to resign from Congress

(NBC, KYMA) - Two congressmen announced Monday they are resigning from Congress respectively.

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) announced his resignation on social media Monday, a day after he dropped out of the race for governor of California.

In his announcement post, Rep. Swalwell denounced calls for his expulsion, but said it would be "wrong" for his constituents if the accusations "distracted" from his duties.

The move comes after calls from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle for Swalwell to step down in the wake of sexual assault and misconduct allegations.

Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) also announced Monday he plans to retire from Congress following the launch of an ethics probe into a past relationship with a former staffer who later died by suicide.

Rep. Gonzales says he intends to formally file for retirement when Congress returns, though he has not specified an exact date for his departure.

The announcement comes weeks after he said he would not seek reelection.

The investigation has drawn increasing attention on Capitol Hill, with lawmakers from both parties calling for accountability as the case moves forward.
