Mexicali Star Wars fans attend academy to prepare for lightsaber tournament

Mexicali Lightsaber Academy

MEXICALI, Mexico (KYMA) - Star Wars fans gather for a fun event not so far, far away.

The first lightsaber tournament will take place this weekend in Mexicali.

It's a sports discipline that combines fencing and martial arts, inspired by Star Wars.

The academy was founded in Mexicali about five years ago, where both students and professionals gather to practice.

They train in public spaces at least twice a week.

Many participants already have experience in other sports.

They use specialized protective gear and, of course, their lightsabers.

“This discipline began 10 years ago in Mexico City with the creation of a specialized academy. Since then, we have grown to over 30 academies, and today the Mexican lightsaber league already has been created,” said Alan Yudiel Padilla, Director of the Lightsaber Academy.

It is expected that the first tournament will attract enthusiasts from all over Mexico as well as from the U.S., since it is not a common activity.
