PATTERSON, Calif. (NBC, KYMA) - The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has confirmed ICE officers were involved in a shooting Tuesday in Patterson, California.

A statement from DHS says officers were conducting a "targeted vehicle stop" and trying to arrest "Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez."

The statement says he is a known gang member and wanted in El Salvador for questioning in connection to a murder.

While its officers approached the car Hernandez "weaponized his vehicle" and tried to run the officers down and officers fired "defensive shots."

DHS also says Hernandez "was taken to a local hospital," and it's not clear what happened leading up to the interaction between the officers and the driver.
