20th annual Mike Benavidez Softball Tournament

KYMA

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - First responders and community members from across the Imperial Valley gathered at Stark Field in El Centro to honor the life and service of former El Centro fire engineer Mike Benavidez through a longstanding softball tournament held in his memory.

Benavidez passed away in 2004, but his legacy continues to resonate strongly among those who knew him and those who carry on the traditions he valued.

The tournament reflects Benavidez’s passion for athletics and his commitment to bringing people together through sports.

“He was a big proponent of softball and sports and athletics for youth and adults in the Valley and we just enjoy coming out here and memorializing him and bringing the community [together] to keep his memory alive,” Wilkinson said.

More than 20 teams participated in the tournament, representing a wide range of first responder agencies and professions from across the region. Teams included members of customs, county fire departments, emergency medical services, local transport agencies, and law enforcement.

While the tournament offers bragging rights and a sense of camaraderie, it also carries a deeper significance.

“Every year another plate gets added [to the main trophy] with a winner, and then, they’ll receive a [different first-place] trophy, as well. So, it’s, it’s an honor to have your team put on there every year if you’re so lucky to win,” Wilkinson said.

Regardless of who takes home the top prize, the tournament continues to fulfill its primary purpose - ensuring that Mike Benavidez’s legacy endures through community, sport, and remembrance.
