Arizona and Purdue set to face-off for Final Four bid

The Wildcats return to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2015

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KYMA) - The Arizona Wildcats are back in the Elite Eight for the first time in more than a decade after a dominant run through the NCAA Tournament.

Top-seeded Arizona will face second-seeded Purdue on Saturday, with tipoff scheduled for 5:50 p.m. in a highly anticipated regional final matchup.

The appearance marks the first Elite Eight berth under Wildcats head coach Tommy Lloyd, who has guided Arizona to the Sweet 16 three times in his first four seasons but had not previously advanced further.

Purdue reached the regional final after a dramatic 79-77 victory over Texas in the Sweet 16, capped by a last-second tip-in from Trey Kaufman-Renn. The win sent the Boilermakers to the Elite Eight for the seventh time in program history.

Saturday’s matchup will mark the 14th meeting between the two programs. Purdue leads the all-time series and has won the last three meetings. Arizona’s last victory over the Boilermakers came in 2001.

The Wildcats enter the game riding the momentum of a historic performance in the Sweet 16, when they overwhelmed fourth-seeded Arkansas. Arizona became the first team in NCAA Tournament history to have six players score at least 14 points in that game.

However, the Wildcats will face one of the nation’s most potent offenses. Purdue leads the country in offensive efficiency and features four players averaging double figures in scoring.

The Boilermakers are seeking their second Final Four appearance in the last three years, while Arizona is looking to advance to its first national semifinal in 25 years.
