ADOT unveils teen suicide prevention license plate

PHOENIX (KYMA) - The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has unveiled a new speciality license plate to give drivers the chance to support teen suicide prevention.

According to a press release, the license plate was unveiled in an effort to raise awareness and funds for Teen Lifeline, a statewide nonprofit operating a "24/7/365 crisis hotline for teenagers."

The plate's design, according to the organization, features a teal and purple suicide prevention awareness ribbon, with the Teen Lifeline website URL in a dark background, and serves a symbol of hope for teens "who may be feeling isolated or overwhelmed."

"Displaying this license plate is a powerful way for young people to see that help is available and that they're not alone," said Michelle Moorhead, executive director of Teen Lifeline. "The teal and purple ribbon is a recognizable symbol of hope, and every time someone chooses to display this new plate, they're helping fund lifesaving programs for teenagers in crisis."

Teen Lifeline says the original design concept was created by Trevor Owens, a student from Show Low High School, after he won a statewide content, which they sponsored, back in 2024, and says they received more than 80 plate design contest entries from teens across the state.

"At Teen Lifeline, one of our core principles is that teens are uniquely equipped to help their peers through tough times," Moorhead said. "This plate is an extension of that belief — created by a teen to save teen lives."

The plate costs $25 annually, with $17 going towards the organization, but Teen Lifeline says drivers don't need to wait until their vehicle's license plate renewal to buy it.
