OpenAI to shut down Sora video app

(CNN, KYMA) - The artificial intelligence (AI) video-generation app Sora is shutting down.

On Tuesday, parent company OpenAI said it's shuttering the standalone app to focus on other priorities, and said it needed to make trade-offs that support its business.

The Sora Team confirmed the news in a post on X saying in part, "To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it: thank you. What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing."

Sora is OpenAI's first standalone app since ChatGPT. The app launched last year as a new creative tool people could use on social media.

Disney had signed a deal with OpenAI back in December that allowed its characters to be part of the AI videos on Sora.

In a statement, Disney said it respects the company's decision and will find new ways to engage with AI platforms.
