More middle 90s heading into weekend

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - The Desert Southwest is gearing up for an unusually warm weekend as strong high pressure continues to dominate the region.

Expect plenty of sunshine and near-record temperatures Friday and Saturday, with highs climbing into the low to mid 90s across Yuma, Phoenix, and other lower desert communities.

Along with the heat, breezy conditions are expected to develop Saturday afternoon, particularly along the Lower Colorado River Valley, with gusts of 10-15 mph increasing to 25-30 mph Sunday and into Monday evening.

These winds, combined with dry conditions and minimal overnight humidity recovery, could elevate fire concerns in parts of the region.

Looking ahead, a major heat wave is forecast for next week, with highs topping 100 degrees as early as Tuesday in Southeast California and Southwest Arizona.

Phoenix is expected to hit 100 degrees by Wednesday, potentially breaking the earliest 100-degree day on record. Temperatures may climb to 105 degrees by Friday, threatening multiple daily and monthly March records.

Due to the extreme heat risk, the National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Watch starting Wednesday for Southeastern California and expanding into Southwestern and South Central Arizona through Sunday.

Residents are advised to stay hydrated, limit time outdoors during peak heat, and keep an eye on vulnerable populations.

For this weekend, though, it's all about enjoying sunny skies, just be prepared for a hot, dry, and occasionally breezy desert weekend.
