Suspect dead after crashing his vehicle into a synagogue in Michigan

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (CBS, KYMA) - Shots were fired and a suspect was dead after a man crashed a vehicle into the Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield Township outside Detroit, Michigan Thursday, according to news outlets citing officials.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said security guards at the temple fired shots at at least one person after the crash, reports said.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer described the incident as "heartbreaking," said she was "working with Michigan State Police (MSP) to get more information," and said "antisemitism and violence have no place in Michigan."

MSP said federal, state, county, and local police responded and were securing the area around the synagogue.

"We continue to ask members of the community to stay away from the scene as it is not safe," they added.

The Jewish Federation of Detroit said its "Jewish agencies" had been placed in a "precautionary lockdown" as authorities responded.
