Azteca boxing ready for ‘Shamrock Showdown’ boxing event in Yuma

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) -  Local boxers are preparing to step into the spotlight this weekend as the Shamrock Showdown Under the Lights amateur boxing event comes to Yuma Catholic’s Ricky Gwynn Stadium on Saturday.

The card will feature fighters from across the region, including several athletes from Yuma’s Azteca Boxing Club, a gym that continues to build momentum in the local boxing scene.

Head coach Richie Preciado says the opportunity to compete in front of a hometown crowd means a lot for his fighters.

“We’re always excited bringing our warriors,” Preciado said. “We’re Azteca — that’s what we are. My kids are warriors.”

Events like this don’t happen often in Yuma, which makes the night even more important for young athletes looking to gain experience in the ring.

Fifteen-year-old boxer Isaiah Preciado says the chance to compete locally is a big opportunity for fighters like him.

“We barely get to fight in Yuma, so this is a very good opportunity for us young boxers to get our name out there,” he said.

Other fighters see the event as a chance to prove themselves and pursue bigger dreams in the sport.

“I’ve got something to prove to everyone,” said Cibola boxer Carlos Flores. “I want to show people that I can do this and maybe one day go pro.”

For some athletes, the gym has also become a place for personal growth. Kofa boxer Gio Sandoval says the environment at Azteca Boxing has helped him connect with others and inspire younger fighters.

“I love meeting new people here,” Sandoval said. “I want to be someone that younger fighters can look up to one day.”

With a full lineup of amateur bouts and a large crowd expected, local coaches say the event is another step toward growing boxing in the Yuma community.

Doors open Saturday at Ricky Gwynn Stadium, with the first bell scheduled for 4 p.m.
