Yuma Catholic splits games on the diamond

Yuma Catholic Girls Softball got back in the win column while Baseball fell to Northwest Christian

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - It was a split day on the diamond for Yuma Catholic as both baseball and softball hosted Northwest Christian at the Elena Orendain Curtis Athletic Complex on Friday afternoon.

Baseball

The Shamrocks hosted the Crusaders and held a 2-1 lead for much of the game, but Northwest Christian rallied late to secure a 3-2 victory.

The Crusaders tied the game at 2-2 when Timothy Sands drove in a run despite being thrown out at first base. Moments later, a pitch from Hiram Silva skipped past the catcher, allowing Chase Morgan to score the go-ahead run.

That proved to be the difference as Northwest Christian held on for the win. Finn Simms delivered a strong performance on the mound to help the Crusaders secure the victory.

With the result, the Shamrocks fall to 3-2 on the season and will face the Parker Broncs next Wednesday.

Softball

Meanwhile, the Yuma Catholic softball team returned home and bounced back from its lone loss of the season with a commanding 13-3 win over Northwest Christian.

The Shamrocks led 5-3 midway through the game until Adayah Carrillo drove in Isabel Rodriguez to extend the Shamrocks’ lead to 6-3. Northwest Christian nearly limited the damage when Caylie Thomas made a running catch in center field and fired home to prevent another run from scoring.

However, Yuma Catholic continued to add insurance runs. Later in the inning, Mya Dean singled to left field to bring home Tessa Orta and push the lead even further.

The Shamrocks continued to pile on runs the rest of the way to secure the 13-3 victory.

With the win, Yuma Catholic improves to 9-1 on the season and will host the Buckeye Union High School in its next game Thursday.
