Kyler Murray set to be released by Cardinals
GLENDALE, Ariz. (KYMA) - The Kyler Murray era in Arizona is coming to an end.
The Arizona Cardinals are set to release veteran quarterback Kyler Murray on the first day of the new league year next week, closing the book on a seven-year tenure marked by flashes of brilliance and stretches of inconsistency.
Murray compiled a 38-48-1 record as Arizona’s starting quarterback after being selected No. 1 overall in the 2019 NFL Draft. His departure follows a 3-14 season in 2025 in which injuries once again limited his availability. Murray played in just five games before landing on injured reserve, going 2-3 while completing 68% of his passes for 962 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions.
The former University of Oklahoma standout addressed fans on X after news of the decision became public, thanking the Cardinals’ faithful and apologizing for falling short of delivering a championship. Murray wrote that he wanted nothing more than to end the organization’s 77-year title drought.
Murray made an immediate impact upon entering the league, earning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2019. He followed with back-to-back Pro Bowl selections in 2020 and 2021. His 2020 campaign remains a high point, as he accounted for 37 total touchdowns and 4,790 yards passing and rushing combined.
While Murray expressed confidence that his best football is still ahead of him, his next destination remains uncertain as free agency approaches.
