Abandoned baby monkey drags ‘surrogate mother stuffed toy’ in Japan

(CBS, KYMA) - A baby Japanese macaque from Ichikawa Zoo in Japan won hearts across the internet after videos of it dragging around an orangutan stuffed toy began surfacing in early February.

Video filmed by X user @mayo_mth shows Punch the monkey dragging around the toy in its enclosure.

The zoo said the monkey was abandoned by his mother shortly after birth, and zookeepers stepped up to rear the primate by hand.

News outlets said Punch was given the stuffed animal as a "surrogate mother" for comfort.

Punch was released into the zoo's macaque enclosure on January 19, but was ostracized by others in the enclosure.
