(CNN, KYMA) - Actor James Van Der Beek has died, a little more than a year after announcing his cancer diagnosis.

The actor rose to fame as Dawson Leery on the 1990s era hit teen drama, "Dawson's Creek." He was also known for films like "Varsity Blues," "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back," and "The Rules of Attraction."

In a post to Van Der Beek's Instagram Wednesday, his wife, Kimberly, said the actor "met his final days with courage, faith and grace," and is asking for privacy at this time.

Van Der Beek was diagnosed with Stage III colorectal cancer in 2023, but didn't speak publicly about it until a year later.

The cause of death has not been revealed. Van Der Beek was 48-years-old and is survived by his wife and six children.

A GoFundMe has been set up the family to help them cover essential living expenses, pay bills and support their children's education.

It has a goal of $350,000, and it has raised over $250,300 so far. If anyone would like to donate to the GoFundMe, click here.
