House fails to adopt tariff provision
(NBC, KYMA) - The House has failed to adopt a procedural rule that would have prevented the House from overturning President Donald Trump's tariffs.
The measure failed by a vote of 214 to 217 on the House floor Tuesday.
Three Republicans opposed the measure, Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Kevin Kiley of California and Don Bacon of Nebraska voted with Democrats to block the rule.
The language in the rule would have prevented the House from voting to overturn President Trump's tariffs at least through the end of July.
Republicans had passed similar language, but it expired at the end of January.
Without this language in place, Democrats will be able to introduce measures to terminate the national emergencies Trump declared when he implemented tariffs.
This could happen as soon as Wednesday, with a resolution led by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY).
