North Carolina Highway Patrol responds to 100-car pileup

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (NBC, KYMA) - A minor crash turned into a major traffic jam on Interstate 85 in North Carolina Saturday night.

A small crash near Exit 60 caused dozens of tractor trailers to slow down in an attempt to avoid hitting it themselves.

According to North Carolina's state troopers, more than 30 tractor-trailers and over 70 cars were trapped on the highway.

The freezing temperatures and snowfall in the area are preventing those trucks from gaining momentum to move which has kept traffic from moving along.

The National Guard was even called to assist clearing the roadways.

Traffic began to move around 8:40 p.m. Eastern Saturday, and the road was reopened about an hour later, although the impact to traffic was expected to be significant.
