AWC Softball opens season splitting double header with CSI

The Matadors cruised past the Golden Eagles in the first game, but the script flipped in the second match

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - The Arizona Western Lady Matadors softball squad opened up their season with a dominant 8-2 win over the College of Southern Idaho Golden Eagles, but the second game of the doubleheader didn't go their way as they fell 13-1.

In the first game, the Mats homered four times. Larissa Rueda had a three-run homer, part of a monstrous five-run third inning.

Rauni Gallegos, Analy Trejo and Aaliyah Soderlund all added solo shots later in the contest as well.

The pitching from Jessica Smith was spectacular as well. The runner-up in strikeouts from last season notched eight punch outs and six hits in the complete game she played.

"She pitched it well, and the defense was solid," said Arizona Western Head Softball Coach Joel Prickett. "Jessica, she's a gamer."

Unfortunately, the second game didn't go there way.

The Matadors fell 13-1 in six innings in the second game of the doubleheader.

Pitcher Marrisa Mauger and the rest of Southern Idaho's defense played a great game, holding the Matadors to two hits throughout the entire game as the bats cooled off compared to the first contest.

With the loss, the Matadors open the season with a 1-1 record.
