Leonel Rodriguez sets Kofa’s single-season scoring record with one game to go
Rodriguez has found the back of the net 38 times, etching his name in Kofa soccer history
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - There's officially a new soccer King in the Kingdom.
Senior forward Leonel Rodriguez cemented his name in Kofa soccer history on Tuesday night, scoring his 38th goal of the season, securing the single-season scoring record at the school in the mercy-rule era.
With his most recent goal, he passed Tiernan Nicewander, who happens to be the son of current head coach Jamie Nicewander.
While he had a lot running through his mind as he stepped up to the penalty box in the final minute of the half, he says this goal was less about him and more about the team.
"I can't lie, I was a little nervous," Rodriguez said. "To be honest, I was fully concentrated on my team. I wasn't concentrated on the goal, and after I scored, congrats to me, but that's about it. The important thing is the team and to have a great season and maybe maybe even win something if possible."
Following the penalty kick, Rodriguez headed towards his bench, where he found the nearest camera to hit a new celebration he had been practicing.
"I just did a little two hands to my mouth, and I opened my mouth, like acting surprised," Rodriguez said. "I thought about it by myself. I was in my room, obviously practicing, and I managed to score the goal and it happened. I didn't really think about it, I just did it."
The Kings would go on to win that game 4-0, but they now have their sights set on their final regular season game against the San Luis Sidewinders.
Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Irv Pallack Field.
