AWC splits doubleheader with SMCC to open season

The Matadors bounced back in game two of their doubleheader after a slow start

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – The Arizona Western Matadors split the doubleheader series against the South Mountain Community College Cougars to open their season at Walt Kammann Field on Tuesday.

In the first game, they got in a hole early, letting up five runs through two innings. The Matadors weren't able to climb back and eventually lost 5-0 to open up their season.

They immediately bounced back, however, scoring four runs in the first inning of Game 2 to jump to an early lead.

They would carry that momentum and ride the hot bat of Gerardo Castro, who went 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run and three RBIs.
