Amsterdam transforms city square into giant garden to celebrate Dutch National Tulip Day

(CBS, KYMA) - Amsterdam is marking the start of tulip season by transforming a city square into a giant garden to celebrate Dutch National Tulip Day.

Thousands showed up to pick free flowers, with 200,000 up for grabs. Organizers say the goal is simple: Spread some joy one tulip at a time.

"Everybody has a favorite color. They see it here in real life. It's what people need, a little bit of happiness," said Arjan Smit, President of Tulip Promotion Netherlands.

There's plenty of happiness to go around as the Netherlands produces billions of tulips each year, making it the world's largest tulip grower.
