Rivals came together over the weekend to build a the Imperial Valley All-Star team
The Imperial Valley's best duked it out with the Coachella Valley's best in the first edition of the Imperial Valley-Coachella Valley All-Star Football Classic
IMPERIAL, Calif. (KYMA) - It's rare to see rivals come together, but the new Imperial Valley–Coachella Valley All-Star Game could be the exception.
On Saturday, Imperial High School hosted the first edition of the All-Star Game, featuring the best football players from the Imperial Valley and the Coachella Valley, which ended in a 41-26 win for Imperial.
Because of all the stellar athletes in the Valley that play both sides of the ball, Tigers Head Coach and Imperial Valley All-Star head coach David Shaw had some tough decisions on which kids to play on what side of the ball, but in the end, it all worked out.
"Most of these kids play both ways on their high school team, but we told them, hey, pick a side of the ball, that way we can get everybody playing time," Shaw said. "The kids that were on defense, they practiced defense the whole week, and the ones that were on offense practiced offense. So I thought it was great, and the cool thing about it is practices were very competitive because we had best on best."
One could say iron sharpened iron leading to the decisive win.
For the athletes, games like this act as great opportunities for them to show off their talent to college coaches.
Both the University of La Verne and the College of the Desert had coaches present.
But according to Coach Shaw, the best part of the entire experience wasn't the win or getting exposure for the kids, but seeing how well they worked together.
"The coolest thing about the whole week is that all the kids meshed well, they came together as a family," Shaw said. "They were all pulling for each other. So they were all about the team atmosphere."
