Wages may be garnished for Americans who default on student loans

(KYMA, CBS) - Across the United States, millions have defaulted on their student loans and the government is looking to take part of their pay checks.

About $1.67 trillion are owed in student loans from over 45 million Americans.

"What the government is doing is they're saying, hey you owe us a bunch of money, we're gonna take some money back from you - how? we're gonna garnish your wages," said Jill Schlesinger, CBS News Business Analyst.

Garnished wages could be up to 15% of a paycheck, part of a tax return, or social security payments.
