At least 13 dead, 98 injured following train derailment in Mexico
(NBC, KYMA) - Authorities in Mexico have reported at least 13 people were killed and 98 others injured after a train derailed Sunday.
The Mexican Navy said the Interoceanic Train was carrying nine crew members and a total of 241 passengers when it crashed near the Town of Nizanda.
139 of those passengers were reported to be out of danger while 98 were injured.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said at least five of those injured are in critical condition, and officials have been dispatched to the scene.
The Mexican Attorney General's Office has opened an investigation into the derailment.
The train was inaugurated in 2023 by former Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to help modernize and connect Mexico's Pacific Port of Salina Cruz with the Gulf Coast.
