First responders in San Diego ready for holiday storm

SAN DIEGO (NBC, KYMA) - With the brunt of the storm hitting on Christmas Eve, and people still needing to get holiday shopping done, first responders and city officials in San Diego are making sure they're ready.

If there's one warning to hang your holiday stocking on, Chris Heiser with the City of San Diego's Office of Emergency Services, is prepared to work this holiday.

"The amount of water it takes to float a car is insignificant. It's...you take a look, you think you can do it, and it turns out you can't. And then, you become part of the problem," Heiser remarked.

He is not underestimating the danger that last minute shopping and heavy rain can create.

That is why the city's lifeguards are already on standby, and are ready to coordinate with the San Diego Police and Fire Departments during any swift water rescue calls.

"You'll probably start seeing signs placed at those areas either later today or tomorrow as a precautionary measure," Heiser shared.

But the prep work has already started, with Ramon Galindo, Public Information Officer for the City of San Diego saying, "Hundreds of employees going to make sure that these flood-prone areas, that everything is clear there, making sure that the water flows once this rain keeps going."

Heiser hopes that all the preparation is enough.

"I need to emphasize that if everything that the city has in place works, and I'm confident it will, then I don't get to activate the EOC," Heiser expressed.
