Body of missing nine-year-old California girl found

FBI

(CNN, KYMA) - The remains of missing nine-year-old California girl Melodee Buzzard have been found in Utah.

This is according to a law enforcement source familiar with the case, who also said her mother, Ashlee, has been arrested. She is being held without bond.

Authorities say Buzzard went on a road trip with her daughter October 7 when surveillance footage captured the girl at a local car rental agency dressed in what seemed to be a disguise.

The rental car traveled through Nebraska, Utah, Arizona, Nevada and Kansas over the next three days.

The Santa Barbara Sheriff's Office says when the mother returned to her home in Lompoc, the child was not in the car.

The girl was reported missing days later on October 14 by a school administrator concerned about her long absence.

The FBI joined the search for Buzzard, in a case that has drawn widespread attention well outside Southern California.
