Hot shooting lifts Casper past Lady Matadors in classic opener

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Arizona Western College women’s basketball opened Chapman Automotive Winter Classic play Tuesday night with a 61–49 loss to Casper College at The House.

The Lady Matadors started strong, setting the tone defensively and building an early lead behind active hands and efficient offense. Arizona Western held Casper to just 10 points in the first quarter and carried a seven-point advantage late in the period after a three-pointer from Chen Pan.

Momentum shifted in the second quarter as Casper found its rhythm from beyond the arc. A scoring run capped by a three put the Thunderbirds in front, and a big second quarter allowed the visitors to take a 33–25 lead into halftime.

Casper continued to apply pressure after the break, controlling the boards and knocking down perimeter shots to stretch the margin to as many as 20 points in the third quarter. Arizona Western struggled to generate consistent offense during the stretch, managing just seven points in the period.

The Lady Matadors showed fight in the fourth quarter, trimming the deficit with improved scoring and defensive effort, but the early surge from Casper proved too much to overcome.

Mable Doumbia led Arizona Western with 14 points, adding seven rebounds and four assists. Chen Pan also finished with 14 points, providing a steady offensive presence. Garance Soulas chipped in 11 points and two steals, while Aline Mastelic was perfect off the bench, scoring six points on 3-of-3 shooting.

Arizona Western will look to rebound as tournament play continues in Yuma.
