Charity stripe troubles cost Matadors in winter classic opener

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Arizona Western College men’s basketball saw its Chapman Automotive Winter Classic opener slip away Monday night, falling 76–67 to Dawson Community College at The House.

The Matadors entered the contest at 10–3 and spent much of the night battling uphill after a slow start. Dawson built an early lead and pushed the advantage to as many as 11 points late in the first half before Arizona Western answered with a brief run. A jumper from Matt Anglo just before the halftime buzzer trimmed the deficit to 32–27 heading into the break.

Arizona Western struggled to find consistency from the perimeter, finishing just 4-for-20 from three-point range. That trend continued after halftime as Dawson stretched the lead behind timely outside shooting, including a three-pointer that pushed the margin to 14 midway through the second half.

Despite strong effort on the glass and multiple attempts to swing momentum, the Matadors couldn’t fully close the gap. A late three by Dawson with just over two minutes remaining stalled Arizona Western’s final push.

Turnovers proved costly, as Arizona Western committed 22 giveaways that led directly to 22 points for Dawson. The Matadors also left points on the floor at the free-throw line, shooting just 17-of-33 in the loss.

Marsai Mason delivered a strong performance in the paint, finishing with 14 points and 14 rebounds, including six offensive boards. Matt Anglo led Arizona Western in scoring with 15 points to go along with five rebounds and two assists.

Off the bench, Mario Brunetto provided a spark with 13 points on efficient shooting, knocking down three shots from beyond the arc. Paora Winitana added 11 rebounds and helped keep the Matadors competitive with his defensive effort.

Arizona Western will look to bounce back as Chapman Automotive Winter Classic play continues this week in Yuma.
