Floodwaters continue covering streets as some water moves through drainage system

SUMAS, Wash. (NBC, KYMA) - In Sumas, Washington, floodwaters from the Nooksack River continue to cover streets, even as some water begins to move through the drainage system.

Many roads remain impassable and some residents are still unable to return home.

All across town, residents are assessing damage and beginning to clear debris. Meanwhile, city leaders are grappling with what comes next.

Sumas Mayor Bruce Bosch says the flooding highlights long-standing problems with the river system and the risks they pose to the city's future.

Mayor Bosch warns that failure carries real consequences.
