First responders in California rescue pursuit suspect who fell into a trench

LOS ANGELES (NBC, KYMA) - A man accused of leading police on a pursuit in a stolen car ended up in an even more dangerous situation.

The Los Angeles Police Department say the man jumped from the stolen car and took off on foot, but he didn't get far before falling into an approximately 30-foot-deep, four-foot-wide vertical shaft at a construction site.

Rescuers were called to the scene in the Lincoln Heights section of L.A. at about 9:30 p.m. Pacific Thursday.

They were able to pull the man up and out. The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition, officials say.
