Nine new cars make the 2025 IIHS Top Safety Picks List

(CBS, KYMA) - If anyone is in the market for a new car, nine new models made the 2025 Top Safety Picks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Six earned the Top Safety Pick+ Award: The Audi All-new A5, Audi Q6 Sportback e-tron, BMW X3, Ford Explorer, Hyundai Ioniq 9 and Kia Sportage.

Meanwhile, the Hyundai Santa Cruz, Nissan Rogue and Toyota Corolla Cross earn the lower-tier Top Safety Pick Award.

The top ranking requires a 'good' rating in crash worthiness, and 'good' or 'acceptable' in headlight and pedestrian emergency braking tests.

"Two of the vehicles, the BMW X3 and the Ford Explorer, improved their headlights, which is really encouraging this time of year, as the, time change occurs, and it's darker at night. So, we're really pushing for improved headlights," said David Aylor, Vice President of Active Safety at IIHS.

The six new vehicles that did not earn safety awards struggled in the new moderate overlap frontal crash test.

The test includes a rear occupant, and IIHS says in many cases, there were issues with the seat belt or risk of chest injury.
